The Tigers, and Detroit, could use a feisty owner like Dan Gilbert

Therea€™s an old trick in the sports world. When it comes to hiring coaches or executives or pretty much making any deal, a contract is rarely officially offered until the moment it is signed.

This allows any of the parties involved to back out at the last second. Everyone can save face by saying there was never officially an offer that was rejected or rescinded. No one wants to look bad or give an explanation in case a potential deal falls through.

Right on cue, Detroit businessman and Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert followed the playbook perfectly Tuesday night. Thata€™s when he told Free Press business columnist John Gallagher the pending sale of his Greektown Casino for $1 billionA had nothing to do with rumors he might use the proceeds to buy the TigersA from the Ilitch family.

Gilbert said the sale would free up hundreds of millions of dollars for many other projects, including the a€œstart-up scene in Detroit.a€

Did you watch the Tigers last season? What are they if not a start-up these days?

Gilbert could be telling the truth. But it would be a great coincidence that therea€™s no deal in the works to buy the Tigers when a sale of the Greektown Casino a€” and hisA reported interest in divesting himself of his other casinosA in Cleveland and Cincinnati a€” would pave the way for him to do exactly that.

Are we really supposed to believe Gilbert will be flush with hundreds of millions that hea€™s going to use to invest in start-ups and StockX, an online stock market for things like sneakers and handbags? Sorry, but that seems like small potatoes. And Gilbert doesna€™t do small potatoes.
